North Pennines AONB (area of outstanding natural beauty)
The Fat Lamb Hotel whilst being midway between the well known Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks, actually lies right on the edge of the lesser known North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) incorporating Alston – Britains highest market town, Weardale and High Force in Teesdale. Described as England's last great wilderness, it is an important area for wild life supporting 80% of our Black Grouse population, plus rare Merlin, Otters and many other endangered species. On its Eastern Edge lies Barnard Castle with the magnificent Bowes Museum - well worth a look and an excellent wet weather alternative.
