Dogs at the Fat Lamb

The Fat Lamb is a dog friendly hotel - we welcome dog owners with amicable, well behaved dogs, and we know that both enjoy our relaxed atmosphere and our open fire. There is some fantastic walking in the area, and the Howgills, Yorkshire Dales and Lake District are beautiful; we wouldn't want any dog owner who stayed with us to have to enjoy them without their companion.

We go to some lengths to ensure that everyone who stays with us enjoys a clean, fresh environment, and we always clean our rooms and public areas more thoroughly after dogs have visited. There are obvious challenges to this, and we ask that dog owners help us to maintain the hotel for the next guest by following our guidelines:

  • Please let us know at the time of booking (or otherwise as soon as you can) whether you will be bringing a dog, so that we can make the necessary preparations
  • Dogs are allowed in the public bar but not in the restaurant. Many dogs prefer this arrangement, as the open fire is in the bar! Please ensure that your dog is kept under close control in the bar area, and does not wander unattended - please keep your dog on a lead in the bar if this is necessary to keep them by your side.
  • We understand dogs bark, particularly in the presence of other dogs. We would prefer dogs who are particularly agitated or excitable to be taken outside to burn off some energy, or left in the car to cool off (whichever you think works best), so that other customers are not unduly disturbed (we will trust your judgement as dog owners on this). There is no total ban on barking but we'd like to keep it from ruining the relaxed atmosphere in the bar.
  • We ask that dogs are not left unattended in bedrooms. Dog owners who wish to eat in the restaurant are asked to pop their dog in their car temporarily. However, many dog owners simply choose to eat from the restaurant menu but sit in the bar area and keep their companion nearby (which is perfectly fine).
  • We request that dog owners bring dog bedding to protect our bedroom carpets and soft furnishings, and to keep dogs from sleeping on the beds. We may be able to provide some dog bedding if you forget to pack some, but we are unable to provide bedding for all dogs on a routine basis.
  • All the usual rules around dogs in the countryside apply - please observe the countryside code, keep dogs on a lead around livestock, and please ensure waste is removed from public footpaths and disposed of safely.

There is a small surcharge for dogs staying, and these funds go towards extra cleaning. Please see the tariff page for more details.
