Nature on the doorstep - walking group heaven

The Fat Lamb is situated in the midst of some of the most spectacular walking terrain in the country. On our very doorstep we have the Howgill Fells, rolling, steep sided hills which can be accessed directly through our own private nature reserve at the rear of the Hotel. Walk in the other direction from the front door and you'll reach Wild Boar Fell at the edge of the Yorkshire Dales which open up to the south.

The Lake District is a short drive away to the east, with its characteristic rugged hills, lakes and forests, whilst to the north west we have the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Our local fells are home to fox, badger and roe deer whilst smaller mammals include a healthy population of red squirrels, mountain hares and rabbits with their associated predators – stoats, weasels and polecats. In the air the babbling call of the curlew and the sharp piping of the oyster catcher herald the start of spring hereabouts and sightings of kestrel and buzzard are common.
